The different skin types

There are mainly 4 types of skin:

  • Oily skin: this is skin that tends to shine during the day due to excess sebum present throughout the face
  • Combination skin: this is the most common skin type, it is skin that has excess sebum and therefore shine of the skin on certain areas of the face only, mainly on the T zone: chin, nose and forehead. While other areas of the face are rather normal with a tendency to dry
  • Dry skin: skin with a lack of sebum which results in skin that lacks comfort and can feel tight.
  • Normal skin: skin that does not have excess or lack of sebum

Generally, the skin type changes little in adulthood. But depending on the environment (heat, humidity), this may change slightly. For example, it is normal to have drier skin in winter and conversely to have oilier skin in summer.

How to identify your skin type?

To identify your skin type, the trick is to rinse your face with water only one morning and wait 30 minutes to 1 hour. If at the end of this time, the skin already begins to shine with sebum on its surface, then it is rather oily skin. If it only shines on certain areas, including the T zone, then it is combination skin. If, on the contrary, it feels a lot of tightness and lacks comfort, then it is dry skin. If it doesn't have any of these and is quite comfortable, then it's normal skin.

To determine the skin type, we also recommend seeking the advice of a professional: beautician, dermatologist or doing a skin analysis in certain cosmetic stores or institutes.

What are the needs and issues?

Once the skin type has been determined, we must then look at these needs. For example, does the skin have:

  • Imperfections i.e. the presence of whiteheads, blackheads, pustules, papules
  • Hyperpigmented spots, i.e. brown spots, uneven or dull complexion
  • Signs of aging, i.e. the presence of wrinkles, fine lines, loss of elasticity, sagging skin
  • Signs of dehydration i.e. fine lines, lack of suppleness, a cardboardy appearance
  • Signs of sensitivity i.e. redness, tingling, itching, etc.

Unfortunately it can be quite difficult to know your skin well: to determine your skin type and its needs. Thus, it is now possible to find technological devices using artificial intelligence to obtain these answers. These devices are available in some cosmetic stores.
